Life Drawing Workshop - Jan. 12, 2011

Damn, it has been a while since I have posted. I started the Winter 2011 quarter and I have Portfolio Presentation to contend with, that's pretty much it. But I've been at school like every day this week working on my marketing and my website so I can use the remaining time I have to focus on my demo reel. Amidst all this madness and new tasks, I made it down to the Life Drawing workshop and had a lot of fun just relaxing and trying out new techniques. I decided to use newsprint and charcoal since it has been a while and I don't want to lose the arm movements and rendering methods that I learned from that process. I totally want to do some more ink and marker/colored pencil drawings again though, that shit was ridiculously fun. I feel like I've gotten much better, but I need to create stuff that represents this new level...and that is a whole other goal.
Oh yeah! I also entered the sketchbook battle again so I can defend my throne during what I really hope is going to be my last quarter at AILV. I started page one with Reggie Watts and Daft Punk. Some good musicians. Word.

Time Well Spent

What's up?! I chilled in the Anatomy class yesterday, then I went to a couple hours of the workshop afterwords. It allowed me to draw in many different mind states. Everything from warming up and feeling all rusty, drawing while casually talking, getting silently into the zone, feeling like I suck ass, deliriously making sloppy lines to experimenting and possibly getting lucky...

So I was hoping you all could help me out and tell me which pose YOU like best! And oh yeah...I posted something I did in my sketchbook for fun the other day...

Oh and just so you know, there is one drawing in ink that Sheff did to help me out on a pose! Thanks Sheff!

I also uploaded some stuff from my Designing Comics class with Jerry Miller. He is an awesome teacher. Very professional and serious but he gives super helpful critiques and he isn't boring! There are also a couple pages from my sketchbook that I am still working on.

September 11th Workshop

Yo! Here is a ton of stuff I've been doing lately. I have been working on this 3d effects advertisement piece for a class. Randolf suggested I tie in some type of watery Vegas theme club so I was thinking either Rain or Wet Republic or something. So I vectorized the logo with Illustrator and brought it into Maya after I did all this ocean and cloud magic that I do. There is just a sample render for now and I know that the symbol is backwards but whatever I still got some time.

I also did a Bob Marley painting and a Basil Gogos master copy in my sketchbook for fun. Didn't spend too long on them but I think they look cool. Then there are some charcoal drawings from September 11th. I thought the workshop went pretty damn well. It was like medium/long poses and I was just being loose but still thinking a bit about the lessons I have learned. What I really wanted was to just incorporate what I like to see in other people's life drawings. Rhythms and curves, but hard lines and edges can still serve a purpose in my opinion. For design and contrast at least. But I had a show that night too so it put me in a strange mood.

Somebody took a very dark video and I didn't notice because I was four beers in and had my glasses off hahaha! We are a Weezer cover band and we are called I'm Your Daddy. Here is us playing Troublemaker at Money Plays.

September 4th Workshop

Yeah...I know that September 4th was a while ago. I am moving in a strange slow motion lately while everything is speeding by. Somehow, some stuff is getting done. Anyway...I decided I would use charcoal and conte again because I don't want to lose my chops when it comes to working large with traditional media. I still want to try some other materials but only if they're good! So hopefully someone awesome can recommend something. I crammed a ton of drawings onto the first page. I just drew over the really light, early warm-up poses because they sucked anyway. I think it made for an interesting composition. You should see the next update though, it's even sloppier.

Life Drawing Workshop August 7th 2010

Yo. Jon was asking me how the session went. It felt pretty bad at first, but towards the end I felt better about it. Something about drawing such a long dress on the figure after doing the nude poses was very strange. This session had a strange mood to it for me...it's hard to explain. Trying to let go of several different factors of stress and nervousness can be difficult sometimes.

Life Drawing Workshop July 31st 2010

Here are my life drawings from the last workshop session. It was long pose day so we started off with a bunch of 2 minute poses then we did a couple of 20s and then two 45s. I used conte for the last 45 minute pose. I think I got some decent ones. The whole time though I was thinking of how awesome my marker ones were and about how much I was struggling to really get my charcoal to do what I want. I spent a lot of time sharpening and sanding it so I had the thin and fat edge but I must have been pressing hard or something because my thin edge was always wearing down quick. I was constantly experimenting with different weight leads...B, HB, 3B...all that fun stuff.

Then I tried to take better photos by setting it on my easel outside instead of just on the ground in the garage or on my bed where I always end up with horrible photographs that I can barely even level in Photoshop. I have found something else I need to learn...

I also decided to try and tackle oil painting once again so I started that small canvas while I was chilling with Jon. He gave me some good advice when it comes to preparing your materials and how much paint and linseed oil I should use. Turns out I usually mess up my preparation and screw myself right in the beginning when it comes to the more traditional mediums I am not as experienced with. But it feels like a good time to really figure it out. Anyway...um...yeah! Peace!

Life Drawing Workshop July 17th 2010

Yeah! About four more hours of drawing mileage in front of a model! Woo! I should be between 160-200 now. I used some conte at first, then some primo charcoals later in the session. Most of these are two minutes, a couple of fives, and the longest ones were tens.
