Breaking the Rules...

There's a picture of my artistic arsenal on the floor. I decided to just tape and paint on one page, and that sucked. Then I started using some skateboard, car, and magazine references with microns and ink. I decided to take a cue from James Jean and just cross and overlap lines. I felt like I was breaking my own rules and there were times when I found myself trying to stop at the "edge" of another drawing. I liked the result and it seems I can do more with markers then I had first though. I also used a bit of chalk pastels on the cheetah and surfboard, then I just used all types of markers and colored pencils. I'm hoping to do more stuff like this with the rest of the sketchbook, experimenting with different mediums and such because I am having more fun and I feel like this is the best book I've done so far.

Mo Gouache!

Step-by-step shots of a camaro done in gouache and acrylic. It totally sucked at first.

Gouache?

I thought it was something fancy but it is so much like acrylic paint. Here are a couple watered acrylic and gouache paintings I did today in my sketchbook. Billy Corgan, a handgun, and one of the guitarists from Slipknot. Also there is a Dave Chappelle in acrylic on canvas from a few weeks back...Word. I haven't been doing pencil or charcoal for these, just going for it by eye with the brush. But I did attempt Chappelle in Photoshop first, so that is the exception.

Tablet Action

Alright...We've got a post here with Dave Chappelle, some Vans, and a homeless looking dude in a robe thing. There is something about Dave's face...the angle of his right cheek especially, that was tough to capture. I definitely need to keep practicing faces and portraits. I attempted to draw some shoes from a reference because until now I have never done that and I see Rick do it all the time. I'm glad to see how easy it could be to stay in touch with and be inspired by my peers using blogs and social-platforms...but a couple people still don't have any sites or anywhere to post yet...In other news, I just got Mouse Guard (David Petersen-artist/writer) today and it is awesome so far. I've also been reading The Walking Dead (Tony Moore-artist1-7&covers, Charlie Adlard-artist) and that is bad ass too.

Acrylic Paint & Water Colors

I was inspired by Rick Quemado (http://goodideasdrawnbad.blogspot.com/) to get a little out of my element. Plus I like the way the sketchbook pages look all worn out and ancient after you paint on a bunch of them. So I started the Wage Slave piece and then used references for these other three about a week or two ago.

Portraits and People

Here is Frank Zappa drawn with a tablet in Photoshop. It took about 3 hours. I was trying to get better at zooming in, detailing and drawing the eyes. In the long run I need to figure out how to catch the essence of a person and relay it in different mediums. I have a friend (Patreazy E!) who paints portraits of musicians and she is a very good artist and was a big influence on me at the time. ( I decided to add George Carlin to this post since it was around the same few days, I was just lazy the first time.)

The Bruce Lee of Drawing

Yo. I created this blog because I realized a ton of artists have online blogs where they can post art from different computers and I believe it will help to instill motivation and inspiration by being connected to fellow illustrators, animators, painters, whatever.
