Influence Map


Yo. I made an influence map like Nelson haha. I am left with the feeling that there is still a lot more that influences me but oh well this is a pretty wide representation so it's alright. From the top left, Cowboy Bebop, then Mars Volta, the band and the poster designer Jarred Connor from Mexican Chocolate Design...Castle Crashers, a sick game made by The Behemoth...James Jean...Mouse Guard, an awesome graphic novel written and drawn by David Petersen...Next is an awesome Boba Fett rendition by a guy named Christopher Uminga. Then an awesome graffiti piece by Sever of the 7th Letter Crew...Rocko's Modern Life, Daft Punk, Walking Dead, Scott Pilgrim, David Choe, Chew, Robot Chicken, Fooly Cooly/FLCL and Bruce Lee! And my website is up! But it's not FULLY functional yet...I just figured out how to use Lightbox and create indexes for all my pages in Dreamweaver so I can upload them to the ftp hosting...so annoying haha.

TETRAGRAMMATON








I have done quite a bit lately...one post at a time...I attempted to do another stencil for the cover of my current sketchbook. I wanted to try to do a guitar for a long time, but I changed my mind at the last minute and froze a frame on my Fooly Cooly/FLCL dvd and started sketching Canti, the weird television-faced robot. I tried to keep in mind another stencil that didn't go so well because the lines were too thin for the paint. But I also wanted to keep it connected so it would make sense after the spray. Well, I totally over-sprayed parts of it and I guess when I tried to transfer from sharpie to the cut I still didn't get it quite right. One of my homies who has seen that show couldn't even see it! Damn! Fail.

Oh well, I did some cool gouache/water color paintings inside the cover of Ghost Dog and Brad Pitt's character from Snatch. I got a chance to show my sketchbook to an art director named John Shaw from this printing company called Apple Tree Wear. He liked the Brad Pitt one a lot but he said I should take that style/scheme and draw some original ideas/references. He actually said, "I don't know, like a cat in a hat or something." I also mentioned how I have been taking photographs so I can paint from my own reference and he said to keep moving in that direction. Then I remembered I have some photographs of a cat in a hat! So voila! I painted a couple pages of ginger in a little cowboy hat. Hopefully he likes one of those...maybe I can e-mail him this web link.

In-N-Out Motion Gfx Assignment







YO. So I have this Computer Animation Studio class and I need to assemble a logo somehow. I decided I would try to use Autodesk Maya and Adobe After Effects. This is what I have so far...A rough playblast of the camera move I was creating in Maya, a couple of mental ray render pics and a picture of the vectorized logo done in Adobe Illustrator. Damn, crossing programs like crazy now. I didn't "design" the logos or anything, that's all copyright/trademark/belongs to In-N-Out/ I don't think I can get sued for this kind of stuff. Hahaha.

On a side note, I'm listening to Vicarious Atonement by The Mars Volta. I forgot how awesome these old albums are.

Life Drawing Workshop August 21st 2010














Yo. Here is a big ass batch of what's going on in my sketchbook lately. I went to the workshop and it was long pose day. We started with a page of 1s, then we did some 2s, switched it up to a couple of 5s...then we did a lot of 20s and a 15. Yeah...I also posted a sketchbook page that I actually finished and then another page of Chew inspired action. Finally there is a page of some logo concepts...

Andy Gentile - Guest Speaker


So Andy Gentile came into our school to speak Thursday afternoon.
He is a level designer/note tracker who has worked on titles such as Tony Hawk's Underground and Guitar Hero along with many other similar titles (THUG2, THAW, GH:METALLICA...) I took a few notes on some of the random things he said...

- Got started in the industry by playing Tony Hawk a lot online and he was one of the top players in its community. He wrote messages/bug reports to the developers about how he got high scores on levels, areas that annoyed him, things that were useless. Then they invited him out to the studio after he finished high school and he started doing some game testing.

- He had the opportunity to prove that he wasn't a jerk (many people on the internet are), and that he could communicate well. Especially when it came to level critiques.

- Taught himself 3DSMax in about two months so he could design levels. He said he opened it up and pressed F1. But he knew the game well and knew what he wanted to do with the program.

- Neversoft doesn't use Maya AT ALL.

- Push your skills! Versatility can save your ass when it comes to lay offs. His superiors knew that he could also play drums and he was able to push some of his band's songs into a few of the video games...(The company doesn't have to deal with labels or managers, saved Neversoft money and adds originality to the game) This was also how he got his start as a note tracker for Guitar Hero games.

- A Note Tracker does whatever to transcribe audio for rhythm games. Uses Logic to map out songs for Guitar Hero games.

- Tracking guitars, is way, way harder than tracking drums. Andy and several other note trackers had to write note tracking guides for other employees with tips & shortcuts, troubleshooting...The guitar book is definitely the thickest.

- Performed drum visuals for mo-cap, was told to be extra flashy

- Said he absolutely believes that Neversoft and other companies would give testers a chance to prove themselves and move up.

- If you are ever sent somewhere to do environment research, take 360 degree pictures. He said you have no idea how many times you will look at a shot and say "What is right next to that?!"

- Some funny conversations and inside jokes can end up as finalized in game ideas

- "It's not where you work, it's who you're working with". Having fun, cool people around you means much more than just bragging about which company you are at

- Always take pictures and screen-shots of iterations or changes (W.I.P.) so you can show others "Here's how I came up with this solution"

- Giving the game to someone else is very important. Gamers usually don't care about some small detail you may be stressing over.

- KEEP IT SIMPLE, STUPID! (K.I.S.S.)

- You're going to have to redo your work, but you will usually be at least twice as fast

- They always want to see paper maps (top down, pencil, roughs) of your ideas before you start working on them.

- You need to think about selling your ideas to someone else. Make them think it's new. Budgets and schedules are very strict when it comes to level sizes and one person's small idea could create a lot of work for other departments. The space budget exists mainly to save time.

- When it comes to Google, if you can't find what you want you're probably searching wrong.

This whole seminar was really inspiring. I was given a chance to see how somebody else is successfully merging their art and music into their career. He seemed like a really laid back guy who wasn't that confident in his technical abilities at first, so he made damn sure to be a reliable person that the company could count on. He is only two or three years older than me and he has somewhere around 15 titles under his belt. NETWORK!!

Dead Milkmen!


I remember when I didn't record video of myself playing guitar. Or when I didn't record audio either. I must have sucked really bad because I watch and listen to myself and I still suck so what the hell. This song was tough though, but I am glad I finally did it and uploaded it. I need to start posting more of this stuff man! Balancing things out and just getting stuff done! I am spreading myself out and what I need right now is focus! So it feels good to get some fun stuff out of the way so I can get back to work instead of feeling burnt out.

Adjustments

YO. I did some more work on my reel. Randolf helped me make a list of things I should change and I got about halfway through it. There are a few other things to do that are more intense...so I'm saving those for last. If I get all of the quick, easy stuff out of the way it will bring up my momentum for the heavy work. I think it's getting better, but I know it's going to keep on changing.

Woo!

My website is up! But so far it is just one picture with a couple of "hot spots". Hahaha! In your face! It will some day soon be very awesome...I have been doing a lot of experimenting with the render farm and coming up with disappointment. But I am learning some good stuff so hopefully they will be even better when I get them right. I have a lot of great ideas and tips from Randolf that I still need to implement into my demo reel. I also have some sketches to scan in...hopefully I will get some of this done later today.

INTRODUCING...


So here is my intro after some more tweaking. Changed the comp size, replaced some shapes, changed the main font, changed my title...doing lots to it. Like Randolf would say..."Needs more sugar, man!" I was trying to figure out ways to fill up space after I expanded it to HD720, and I noticed that my spoke shapes are elliptical! When they rotate it looks a bit unusual...oh well, I've been working on this forever and I've got tons of other stuff to do!

Reel Talk


I've been messing with my demo some more. I am still not totally sure what I am, I think I am a character/graphic animator...But I am looking at my pieces and seeing the levels that I want them to be at in my head, so I am taking some notes on how to make them more story-driven. I've got a lot of good ideas, it is just hard to get motivated to work on a piece sometimes. Especially when you start running into difficult technical issues, or seemingly unavoidable and tedious solutions.

30 Dead Djs Motion Graphic




What's up? I was messing this idea that Randolf gave me about one of my "CD Covers" that I made a while back for The Tryforz. The image was done a long time ago in Photoshop and I can't remember exactly how I got that weird background. I spent a bit trying to reproduce something similar in After Effects. I think it's okay, I tried to keep it fast paced. It probably won't end up in the reel but dammit at least I'm thinking and doing something! Making progress on some pieces somehow whether or not it matters to anyone.

Life Drawing Workshop August 7th 2010




Yo. Jon was asking me how the session went. It felt pretty bad at first, but towards the end I felt better about it. Something about drawing such a long dress on the figure after doing the nude poses was very strange. This session had a strange mood to it for me...it's hard to explain. Trying to let go of several different factors of stress and nervousness can be difficult sometimes.

BLAMMO!


Tweaked an old assignment for my demo reel. I wanted to add a couple more moving holds to it. They still feel a little funny...not as good as the first ones for some reason. I must have just been bad ass that day. The main reason I did this was to extend the syncopated music-animation action in the beginning of my demo reel. Le sigh...there is less Flash(it's just not good enough I guess...), less illustration, less 2d and more 3d and motion graphics. Oh well, at least I could totally get a job if people know I can rock Maya & Aftereffects. Then they will look at my site and be like, "He knows Flash too?! GET HIM!" Or at least that's what I hope. Damn, I do a lot of stuff! It sucks that I need to try and sell just ONE skill to graduate. I still want to try and do some really awesome Flash animations that hopefully someone will say I should throw in there. Too much work to do, but now that I know how to use the render farm, things will be much easier. If only I figured that out on week 1! It's already week 4 and it's practically week 5. And I have a show coming up! Weezer covers! Ahahah!

*Edit: I rendered out some different lighting on the render farm. It looks alright but I noticed a bit of clipping on a few of the poses. There is some weird shadow I didn't really want in the back corner of there too. I might have to try and use some render passes to get rid of the background so he can just be in that white Matrix-y place.

Sites & Logos...Damn You Graphic Design!

















I have been trying to make an awesome website and logo and I'm getting frustrated in attempts to come up with something simple yet original. Trying out tons of different fonts and colors...shrinking things down to make sure you can still read it...Lots of Photoshop alignments and transformations...grids, rulers, snap-to action...with some of my art mixed in. Just trying to make a ridiculous amount so that when the time comes I have at least one good piece that I feel represents me.
